Lip Smacking Orange Salad

Citrus fruits are the topic of today?s power foods blog group, and I?ve chosen to tribute the orange. There?s good reason to drink to the orange, or drink up the orange juice. One orange has 116.2% daily nutritional value for vitamin C; it?s also a good source of fiber at 12.6% DV.

Vitamin C intake helps to lower risk for inflammation by helping to prevent the free radicals from triggering the inflammation response, which is responsible for conditions like heart disease, osteoarthritis, asthma, and rheumatoid arthritis. It also helps to prevent cancer. One 2003 Australian study by the Commonwealth Scientific And Industrial Research group showed that citrus offers 40-50% reductions in mouth, larynx, and stomach cancers. Other benefits are lower risk of lung and colon cancer. It?s important to eat or drink the citrus for full benefit of the nutrients, as the fruit seems to offer more protection against free radicals than vitamins.

Today?s healthy lip smacking orange salad is a return to one that I posted last year and I think is worth revisiting. It?s one of my favorite salads for its visual appeal and for its flavor. It also includes almonds, another delicious power food.

?

Servings: 4 ? ? ? ? ? ? Prep Time: 15 minutes ? ? ? ? ? ? ?Total time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

Mixed salad greens ? enough for four people

1 orange

3 tablespoons slivered onion

1 small tooth garlic, minced

1-? tablespoons olive oil

1-? teaspoons sherry vinegar, or balsamic vinegar as next best option

2 teaspoons orange juice

1/3 cup Marcona almonds (available at Trader Joe?s, Costco, and Amazon)

? teaspoon sea salt

Pinch black pepper

? to 1/3 cup small squares of Manchego cheese to decorate the top of the salad

Procedure:

1. Use a paring knife to cut the peel off the orange, cutting deep enough to show the orange segments underneath the skin. Cut close to the membrane walls on both sides of each orange segment to remove the segments. Place the orange segments in a bowl and set it aside. 2. In a small bowl mix together the olive oil, sherry vinegar, garlic, salt and black pepper. Set it aside.

3. Wash the lettuce and place it in a serving bowl. Toss the greens with the vinaigrette, the slice onion, ? of the almonds, and half of the orange segments.

4. Decorate the top of the salad with the remaining orange segments and the remaining Marcona almonds.

Why Shelters Should Adopt Out Black Cats at Halloween - Harrison ...

Every year I see big discussions from shelters about closing down their black cat adoptions near and on Halloween.

Halloween and black cats....sigh.?Well, we do things differently at Pets Alive Westchester!

We will be promoting cats on Halloween for $31 and black cats for $13 (all black cats over 1-year-old). People started telling us all about the Satanic cults out there that adopt to kill the animals. Many shelters won?t adopt out cats at ALL during the ENTIRE MONTH OF OCTOBER!! I want to shake these people. I presented a scenario.

Please review:

It is two days before Halloween. An elderly woman walks in. She lost her cat a few weeks ago. He was 21-years-old and she had him almost his whole life. She is heart broken. She did everything she could for him and she shows you pictures as she cries. She decided that she needs another cat in her life, life is not the same without one, and since she is older she is looking to adopt a senior cat. You show her your cat rooms and you watch as she wanders from cat to cat, room to room, petting and cooing softly to the cats. After some time, she decides on the cat that has captured her heart. It is Shadow. A black cat. So you go out and tell her to come back in a month or pick a different cat.

Does this make sense to anyone? Really? Because it is close to Halloween and Shadow is a black cat she must be denied. Shelter policy.?HELLO??? HELLO? Does anyone see a HUGE disconnect here?

These sort of archaic policies need to be put to bed and left there. EVERY adoption, every person goes through the SAME process, whether it is Halloween, or Christmas or Easter.

The holiday does NOT change that if you have common sense and if your adoption team is decent and educated. If a woman came in dressed as a witch and said she wanted to adopt a black cat, any black cat, it didn?t matter ? would you give HER one? Or a 15-year-old boy? No, but they would fail for OTHER reasons having nothing to do with the holiday.

The first person because we don?t adopt ?ANY? animal to ?ANYONE."

We wait to see a connection and love blossoming on the face and a healthy interaction between person and pet. That woman that just wanted ?any cat? wouldn?t pass that. And the 15-year-old boy? Well, he has to be 21, so he fails automatically.

Additionally animals being harmed at Halloween is mostly a myth. Does it still happen? Sure, just like it does every OTHER day of the week. If we see animals that were tortured on Dec. 20 do we say it was a result of the Christmas holiday? In April is it a result of Arbor Day? No, but if it happens anywhere in October it is attributed to Halloween.

I have spent considerable time this week researching the number of animal torture, mutilation and abuse cases in the course of a year. Know what I found? That October does NOT show a higher percentage of these at all. The media just HIGHLIGHTS it more. The media also continues to do ?Keeping your pet safe on Halloween? stories every single year, but yet statistics show that there are no increased cases of this.

In fact more animals are injured, lost or traumatized during July 4!

But I worked in media at one point and it was always an assignment every year. Halloween and protecting animals. We never thought to question it, just pulled up archaic stories and gave out tips. People ? let these die, they aren?t real. But shelters use these stories to ?protect? their animals from adoption.

In 1996 a news crew did an intensive study around Halloween to see if any more animals were harmed THEN, than any other time. Result? No. No increase or stories of any cruelty to any animals. And really, let?s face it?do people intent on harming animals need to come to a shelter, give their drivers license and ID, home address and phone numbers, vet information, personal references, and pay an adoption fee to get a cat?

Umm, no, you can walk outside most supermarkets and adopt a kitten or go to any feral cat community and trap one. People are not coming to us, knowing we will be doing follow up calls to check on the pets in a few days and then again in a few weeks, and handing over all this personal information so they can mutilate the animals.

If it isn?t logical and it doesn?t make sense, then it probably isn?t a real threat.

So the bottom line is this. We love our animals. ALL of them. We are careful with EVERY adoption. Holidays and every day of the week or month. We constantly try to find good homes, we constantly try to market our animals better and we constantly try to save more lives. We are always on the side of the animals.

We always will be.

So shelters please stop denying your animals home. Trust your adoption staff. Let your black cats go home.

Liquid Nitrogen Cocktails: Smoking Hot Trend Or Unnecessary Risk?

Doctors use liquid nitrogen ? a substance registering a wickedly cold 321 degrees below zero Fahrenheit ? to freeze warts so they dry up and fall off. Yes, folks, this stuff kills tissue. So imagine what it might do to your stomach if you drink some.

Unfortunately, a British teen recently found out the hard way. The Telegraph reports this week that an 18-year-old had a portion of her perforated stomach removed after sipping the stuff in a trendy cocktail where the substance was used to chill the glass and create a smoky vapor.

And, as ABC News puts it, "celebrity chefs, master mixologists and medical experts from around the world are steamed up" over it.

?

"Anything that is the least bit hazardous does not belong in the bar," Ray Foley, editor of Bartending Magazine, tells ABC. "People are getting out of hand with these products to show off and not take care of their clients. This nitrogen cocktail; it's ridiculous."

John Ashton, director of public health for Cumbria County in the UK, tells the BBC: "This girl is the victim of an irresponsible alcohol industry that's now competing on gimmicks."

In fact, the British equivalent of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Food Standards Agency, issued a warning to consumers after the story broke. "Although it is not a toxic substance, its extreme cold temperature makes it unsafe for people to drink and eat because the human body is unable to cope with such a cold internal temperature," the warning says.

The British teen's doctors aren't talking about what happened in her case. But Corey Slovis, chairman of emergency medicine at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville tells ABC: "I imagine what happened was it completely devitalized the tissues and froze it to the point where the gastric acid perforated the stomach."

The thing is, you're not supposed to ingest liquid nitrogen. Bartenders are supposed to swirl it around in a glass until it vaporizes completely, and then pour in the alcohol. But like just about anything, liquid nitrogen can be dangerous when used improperly.

But liquid nitrogen can be used safely, Dave Arnold, head of culinary technology at the French Culinary Institute and the man behind the cocktails at Momofuku in New York, tells ABC. And it's popular with customers, he says: "It's mesmerizing." (In fact, he's written a primer on how to use it right.)

The British teen is the latest in a handful of liquid nitrogen victims over the last few years, while the cocktail industry is under constant pressure to come up with new and creative ways to keep customers coming. But are the risks of liquid nitrogen too great to allow its use behind the bar?

Iran leader: EU support of sanctions is 'foolish'

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's top leader said Wednesday that European countries are "foolish" to support sanctions against Tehran, telling them they are sacrificing themselves for the sake of the United States.

Speaking a week after a dramatic decline in the value of the Iranian rial, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei admitted that the economic measures taken by the West against Iran for its controversial nuclear program have caused problems, but said the Islamic Republic will overcome the difficulties.

He said Europeans are facing far more complicated economic problems than Iranians, a reference to the continent's debt and its own currency woes.

The EU imposed an oil embargo against Iran in July, adding to U.S.-led sanctions that also prohibit the world's banks from completing oil transactions with Iranian banks and further complicate Iran's ability to conduct international commerce.

"They are sacrificing themselves for the sake of America and it's foolish," he told a crowd in the northeastern city of Bojnourd in a speech broadcast on state TV. "This (sanctions) is a war against a nation. Of course, with the grace of God, they will be defeated by the Iranian nation in this war."

The sanctions have been imposed over Iran's refusal to halt its uranium enrichment program, a technology that can be used to produce nuclear fuel or materials for use in a warhead.

The U.S. and its allies accuse Iran of using its civilian nuclear program as a cover to develop nuclear weapons. Tehran has denied the charges, saying its program is peaceful and geared towards generating electricity and producing radioisotopes to treat cancer patients.

In a sign that the measures are biting, Iran's currency ? already in steady decline for months ? lost nearly 40 percent of its value last week. It reached an all-time low of 35,500 to the dollar, down from 24,000 rials days earlier and close to 10,000 rials as recently as early 2011. It's now fluctuating between 29,000 rials to 32,000 rials in the open market.

"They (sanctions) may create problems. Mismanagement may even increase these problems. That's correct but it's not something the Islamic Republic can't resolve," Khamenei said.

The plummet of the rial was blamed on a combination of Iranian government mismanagement and the bite from tighter sanctions. Both measures have reduced the amount of foreign currency coming into the country.

The plummeting value of the rial was marked by a day of limited street protests. They have since died down, and Khamenei downplayed their impact.

"For an hour or two a number of people set two or three garbage cans on fire in a couple of streets in Tehran, and they (the Westerners) started to celebrate and said there are protests in Iran," Khamenei. "Is our situation worse than yours? There have been protests on streets of major European countries for around one year, during day and night."

"Your problem is far more complicated than ours. Your economy is frozen. Do you celebrate that Iran's economy has been weakened? It's you that are wretched," he said.

Iranian officials have called the sanctions a "heavy battle" and Khamenei has pushed for a "resistant economy" to counter the sanctions. Officials say Iran should stop depending on sales of raw materials such as oil, and instead promote "knowledge-based" high-tech companies.

DALLAS (AP) ? The mother of a Dallas woman who admitted beating her 2-year-old daughter and gluing her hands to a wall has asked a judge for leniency.

Elizabeth Escalona faces up to life in prison after pleading guilty in July to attacking daughter Jocelyn Cedillo (seh-DEE'-yoh) last September. Police say the 23-year-old mother attacked the toddler due to potty training problems.

Before resting their case Tuesday, prosecutors completed their questioning of Escalona's mother, Ofelia Escalona. She tearfully asked the judge for leniency in sentencing her daughter.

Ofeila Escalona said her daughter "made a mistake. She's not a monster. She needs help."

She asked the judge to sentence her daughter to probation.

A doctor testified Monday that Jocelyn was hospitalized for about one week with injuries that included bleeding on her brain.

Sometimes it seems like the list of things our iPhones can do is endless. Third-party apps turn our devices into heart monitors, sleep machines, scanners and more.

Apparently, there?s even an app that can help you detect cancer. UMSkinCheck for iPhone promises to help you easily detect skin cancer without the need of a trained professional?

From the app?s iTunes description:

?A skin cancer self exam is used to identify suspicious moles or lesions that may be cancer or growths that may develop into skin cancer (pre-cancers). Individuals who are at a high risk of skin cancer are encouraged to perform frequent skin self exams and to have full body photographic surveys taken by professional photographers. Using UMSkinCheck, patients will be able to complete a full skin cancer self exam and photo survey, track and create a history of moles and lesions and receive regular reminders to perform follow up self exams and check on lesions that are being tracked.?

If it sounds tedious, that?s because it is. Users must take 23 pictures of themselves in the nude before the app can start its?assessment. And this process must be repeated multiple times as time goes on. This way the app can note changes in your skin, and help you identify potential cancer risks.

That being said, we?re talking about helping you detect?cancer?here, one of the most problematic diseases in the world right now. The fact that your iPhone can do that just by using this app is a feat in itself.
