A jump in U.S. consumer confidence sent stocks modestly higher Tuesday. Investors were also encouraged by new efforts from European leaders to find more aggressive cures for the region's debt crisis. Technology stocks lagged.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 32.62 points, or 0.3 percent, to close at 11,555.63.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 2.64, or 0.2 percent, to 1,195.19.
The Nasdaq composite index fell 11.83, or 0.5 percent, to 2,515.51.
For the week to date:
The Dow Jones industrial average is up 323.85 points, or 2.9 percent.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index is up 36.52, or 3.2 percent.
The Nasdaq composite index is up 74, or 3 percent.
For the year to date:
The Dow is down 21.88 points, or 0.2 percent.
The S&P 500 is down 62.45, or 5 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 137.36, or 5.2 percent.
