3 Benefits of an In-Season Training program ? Family Medicine ...

How should I train during my season? This is a common question athletes are faced with during their competitive hockey season. At Healthways Training Center we design our in-season training with three specific goals.

Injury prevention during your season
If we can maintain an athletes strength and flexibility during the season the likelihood of an injury occurring is reduced. Groin pulls, hamstring pulls, shoulder injuries, etc are less likely because muscles remain strong, flexible, and ready for the demands needed in the game of hockey.

Maintain your strength gains
Most athletes can attest to what the first day back in the weight room feels like after a long season ? THEY FEEL WEAK. What people fail to realize is how little you have to train to maintain your strength during the season. Research has proven that one weekly training session will allow an athlete to maintain their strength. This means that one workout per week focusing on a few strength movements for the lower body and upper body will provide enough stimulus to MAINTAIN your strength gains during your season. For most young athletes two workouts per week during your season can IMPROVE your strength gains. These workouts should remain short and done at the beginning of the week. For example our Bismarck Bobcats work out on Monday and Wednesday every week, this gives them plenty of time to recover by Friday night and Saturday night.
Athlete Development
By training year round we increase the athlete?s foundation for all movements. Athlete performance training provides continual neuromuscular development needed for all sports. Many athletes will end the hockey season and begin the baseball season, track season, etc. By continuing to train year round during the adolescent years we are taking advantage of when the body is most receptive to training. This provides us with a broad athletic foundation needed to advance to the next level in whatever sport the athlete chooses. One must remember these workouts remain short in duration and performed at an intensity where the body can recover quickly.

In-season performance training programs prevent injury, maintain strength, and more importantly, continue to build a better athlete.
